“It uses something called machine learning. So, what’s so cool about this is that you can take your hand and put it in front of your face, and it looks pretty darn real. The reason for that is because of how it works. A traditional filter takes your two-dimensional screen and then overlays a face mesh on top that tracks to your face and when you move your hand in between [the filter], it freaks out because it’s tracking [your facial features] in real time. So, the face mesh is like a 3D model that moves with your face. The bold glamour filter does not work that way. This actually takes the camera image itself and then processes it.”
The video helped shed a lot of light for users, but others were still a bit confused.
So, he went into detail in his second video where he highlights how these super realistic filters are leveraging what’s called a generative adversarial network (GAN), where your face is compared to a dataset of images that's used to help redraw your face, pixel by pixel, which then displays on your camera feed.
